Since 1967, the Federal Government began acquisition of most of the properties in Walpack Township. Homes that once stood along the Old Mine Road were either bulldozed or left to fall into a state of disrepair.
While traveling south on Old Mine Road toward the Van Campen Inn, have you ever wondered who lived along this old dirt road many years ago? Walpack Historical Society member, Sharon Spangenberg prepared a 30-page colored booklet to take you on a historic tour of the properties and landmarks along a section of the Old Mine Road. Sharon plans to lead a tour based on her book as well as Hopkins’ 1860 map of Sussex County, on Sunday, November 7th. The tour begins in Sandyston Township where Kuhn Road joins Old Mine Road and ends 2 ½ miles south at the Van Campen Inn in Walpack Township.
Walpack Historical Society invites anyone who would like to join our stroll to meet at the Van Campen Inn at 10:00 am. We will then carpool to the tour’s starting point. If you wish to take Sharon’s booklet with you while you stroll, so you can read along and see some of the homes that once stood along this road, it will be available for sale at the Van Campen Inn before and after the tour. We hope you will be able to join us.
