Cancelled: New Years Day Hike - January 1, 2026 at 10:30am, Walpack Center

The Walpack Historical Society’s First Hike will be taking place on Thursday, January 1st, 2026.  Hikers are to meet at the Flatbrook-Roy Wildlife Management Area (off NPS 615 between Peters Valley and Walpack Center) at 10:30 am.  Please park in the fishermen’s parking lot by the bridge.  Do not park along NPS 615. The hike will start promptly at 11 am and will cover approximately 3 miles of mostly flat roads with a few minor inclines.  Walpack Woodsmen Jeff Stoveken and Dan Tassey, along with other members of WHS, will be guiding hikers along the old roads of the Wildlife Management Area.  Some of the hike’s highlights include the East/West Jersey Line, various sites where mills, farmsteads and homes once stood, as well as the site of the Pleasant Valley School.  We will also be visiting the Layton Family Cemetery.  Those interested in stepping back into 1860 are encouraged to download the Avenza Maps App and the Sussex County, NJ 1860 map, both of which should be free in the Apple App Store.

This is a very weather dependent event.  Please check our social media and website before making the journey to Walpack.  Hikers are asked to dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes with excellent traction.  This event is more of a walk than a hike, but these roads are untreated and could be slippery.  Please remember to bring water and a snack.  Well-behaved dogs are welcomed but must be leashed at all times.

We hope to see you on New Year’s Day!
