A Stroll Down Main Street - Sunday, Sept. 23

On Sunday September 23 – Walpack Historical Society, in cooperation with the National Park Service, the Township of Walpack and the United States Postal Service will host “A STROLL DOWN MAIN STREET and A PEEK INSIDE” with guided walking tours of the historic village of Walpack Center. Buildings open to visitors include the Methodist Church dedicated in 1872, the Society’s Rosenkrans Museum, the 1915 General Store and Post Office, along with Walpack’s classic 1893 one room schoolhouse which educated its last students in 1951 and remains in operation today as the Walpack Town Hall. Points of interest on the tour will also include former locations of buildings that no longer exist, such as the blacksmith shop, with enlarged and restored old photographs displayed at the sites depicting the buildings the way they were. Tours will be conducted by Society members and volunteers personally familiar with the history of the Village, including some former residents and pupils who attended the school.

By special arrangement the Walpack Center Post Office which closed in 1988 will be officially reopened for the day and a postal clerk will be on hand to sell postage stamps, accept outgoing mail and affix a special limited edition commemorative “Walpack Remembered” postage stamp cancellation mark on all mail. Cards and envelopes will be available for purchase.

The program starts at 1:00 PM at the Walpack Center Methodist Church. All tours will depart from this location. Attendees may join our guided tours or stroll the village at their leisure. There is no charge for admission and parking is free.
